The number of self-styled Godmen is increasing day by day in India. These self-proclaimed spiritual gurus have a tendency to attract controversies towards them, from sex scandals to preying innocent ‘bhakts’, they seem to have it all in their portfolios. With their increase in number in India, the number controversies attached to their nasty crimes is increasing as well.

Swami Sadachari Sai Baba Om

Swami Sadachari Sai Baba Omji or simply known as Swami Om Ji is known for his humour and stint on the popular reality TV show Bigg Boss. He is deeply into politics and is a man spiralled in a lot of controversies, one of them being slapping a woman on national television. According to Delhi Police, he was involved in seven cases under the Arms Act and Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA). This self-styled godman calls himself a spiritual person and an influencer but has aced every controversial boundary. 

Asaram

Asumal Sirumalani Harpalani or popularly known as Asaram is a controversial Indian godman and is deeply engulfed in the circle of politics and religious discourses.

This self-styled godman was convicted in a sexual assault case on March 2018 and was sentenced to life in jail for raping a minor girl. He came into limelight in the early 70s and gradually established over 400 ashrams all over India and abroad as well. Even after these dreadful acts he still has a great number of disciples who are blindly following his lead.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan is the head of the Indian social group “Dera Sacha Sauda” and was in the list of 100 most powerful Indians in 2005. But along with it, various controversies have been attached with him. From raping one of his followers, being accused of murdering two people including a journalist to castration of 400 sadhus at the Dera, he has it all in his controversy kit. Later Gurmeet Ram Rahim was provided Z+ security by the government on the basis of inputs about threat to his life. He has released several music albums and films, which entirely revolve around himself and his teachings.

Radhe Maa

Radhe Maa is a self-styled Indian “Godwoman” who made her debut in TV as a guest in Bigg Boss. Radhe Maa, whose real name is Sukhvinder Kaur, has constantly been accused of hurting religious sentiments, threatening, obscenity and other offences. Dolly Bindra, an Indian actress even accused Radhe Maa of sexual exploitation two years ago. Once Radhe Maa’s official website was hacked and the hacker leaked pictures of her clad in a red miniskirt and boots along with one of her photo of embracing two men. She was also accused by a woman for instigating her husband’s family to torture her mentally and physically. 

Paramahamsa Nithyananda

Paramahamsa Nithyananda is the founder of a trust Nithyananda Dhyanapeetam, which has temples, gurukuls, and ashrams across many countries. In the year 2010, Sun TV reported footage of Nithyananda along with two women in a bedroom, one of them was his follower. He has even claimed to have discovered over 400 esoteric powers including kundalini and third eye awakening! He has claimed himself nothing but God who can even see through smog and walls! He even claims to perform paranormal phenomena and the list is almost never-ending.

He is probably the most controversial hodman of India. He was charged against the rape of a girl in Karnataka but fled India without a passport to save himself and last year it was in the news that he has founded a new nation on his own by the name ‘Kailasa’ and is calling it the greatest Hindu nation on earth.
